Mumbai Marathon

The Mumbai Marathon is part of the World’s biggest single sport event for a social cause, charity. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon started in the year 2004 on the lines of London Marathon. It is one of the four legs of the Greatest Race on Earth. The remaining three are the Singapore, Hongkong and Nairobi Marathons. The Marathon has grown every year and raised more and more funds for charity. The 2006 Marathon raised 40 million rupees and in 2007 the charity got doubled to 80 million. The 2008 Mumbai Marathon scheduled for Jan 20 would surpass the 2007 figures by more than double as the tradition of the past few years.

The Social Face of Mumbai. The success of Mumbai Marathon year after year is a befitting tribute to the charitable spirit of Mumbai. Thousands of individual runners, and corporate teams raise pledges to collect money for charity and participate in the 42 kms and the half marathon runs. The pledges and charity is managed by GiveIndia, a non-profit NGO. The event is a big draw for corporate, film personalities and even political leaders to demonstrate their concern for social causes.

There are various events in the Marathon apart from the full race. The Corporate Challenge would have teams covering the full route akin to a relay race. Each member covers a distance of seven kms and high precision timing devices called the Chip Timers are used to time the event. All are welcome as part of their school, college, society, colony or community and even as an individual. This is the run for fun and run for charity. The success of Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has inspired Bangalore and other cities on this wholesome path of charity.
